Every Banana Ball team leans on a gimmick. The Firefighters lean on a job. Their players wear fire helmets instead of batting helmets, their uniforms copy the reflective striping on real turnout gear, and a meaningful chunk of the roster has spent actual shifts on actual engines. It is the most literal identity in the league, and it has aged into something better than a bit.

Here is who the Firefighters are, where they came from, and what happened to them in 2026.

Who are the Firefighters?

The Firefighters are Banana Ball's third team. Bananas owner Jesse Cole announced them on October 5, 2023 — the idea came out of his own kids' fascination with firefighters — and the club played its first game on May 30, 2024 against the Savannah Bananas at Grayson Stadium.

That first season, they existed mostly as an opponent. The Bananas needed teams to play, and the Firefighters filled dates. Starting in 2025 that changed: the Firefighters began running their own independent schedule instead of serving as a traveling foil, which is the step that turned them from a concept into a franchise. Today they are one of the six clubs in the Banana Ball Championship League, alongside the Bananas, the Party Animals, the Texas Tailgaters, the Indianapolis Clowns and the Loco Beach Coconuts.

Fire helmets, turnout gear, and the 343

The visual language is not subtle, and it is not supposed to be. Batters step into the box wearing firefighter helmets. The red uniforms carry yellow accents modeled on the reflective stripes of turnout gear. Ladders turn up as props in celebrations.

Underneath the theater is the part the team takes seriously: the roster deliberately includes people with fire-service ties, and the club says it plays in memory of fallen firefighters, including the 343 lost on September 11. In a league built on choreographed chaos, the Firefighters are the team with a reason to exist beyond the chaos.

Mat Wolf is the clearest example. He is an Oklahoma City firefighter and a fourth-generation member of the fire service, and he spent three seasons with the Savannah Bananas before being traded to the Firefighters — where the uniform finally matched the day job. Valerie Perez, the first woman to manage a Banana Ball team

The Firefighters' most important signing was their coach.

Valerie Perez spent roughly a decade with the Corpus Christi Fire Department, joining the fire service in 2015, before moving into professional baseball full time. She is the first woman to manage a Banana Ball team, and she is not a figurehead — she also plays for the club.

Her baseball résumé is real. Perez has represented the USA Baseball Women's National Team, and she signed to play for Team New York in the inaugural 2026 season of the Women's Professional Baseball League. A working firefighter who can genuinely hit, managing a team of firefighters: the whole franchise pitch fits into one person.

The 2025 run that put them on the map

For a team that started as filler, the Firefighters escalated fast.

In October 2025 they upset the Savannah Bananas in a Showdown tiebreaker in the first Banana Ball playoff game ever played, which sent them to the Tour Championship final. There they ran into the Party Animals and lost 4–0 at Grayson Stadium.

Losing a final in your second season is not a bad outcome. It gave the Firefighters the one thing a novelty team struggles to buy: the credibility of having nearly won something.

Where the Firefighters stand in 2026

The follow-up has been harder.

As of September 7, 2026 the Firefighters sit sixth in the BBCL at 24-31 (.436), 7.5 games behind the Savannah Bananas, with 178 points for and 213 against — a league-worst -35 differential. They have six games left and sit 2.5 back of the playoff line.

That is a longshot, not a dead season. Four teams reach the October playoffs: the Banana Ball Open champion holds an automatic berth, and the next three by winning percentage join them. The Texas Tailgaters own that automatic bid for 2026 after winning the Open in April, so the Firefighters are chasing the last of the three places decided by record — and they need help.

One bright spot buried in the table: 465 successful trick plays, which is not nothing in a league where trick plays are an official tiebreaker, sitting second in the order behind head-to-head record.
