The road to the Banana Bowl in one paragraph
Six teams. A preseason that seeds a four-team April tournament, the Banana Ball Open, whose winner gets an automatic playoff berth. A 50-game regular season on the tour, ranked by winning percentage. A 4-team playoff in early October. One championship game — the Banana Bowl — at Nationals Park on October 10, 2026. That is the whole structure; the rest of this page is the detail, including the parts the league has not finalised in public.
Stage 1: The Banana Ball Open
The Open is new for 2026 and it is the league's answer to a problem touring leagues have: how do you make February and March matter? The season opened on February 26–28 in Tallahassee with 11 preseason games scheduled in all, and the four best preseason teams advanced to the Open at Grayson Stadium in Savannah on April 16–19. Two teams were left out before a single regular-season game had been played.
The Open is a straight four-team knockout played on the Bananas' home field, and its prize is significant: the champion is guaranteed a place in the October playoffs no matter what happens over the next five months. In the inaugural edition the Texas Tailgaters beat the Savannah Bananas in the final — an upset on the Bananas' own field — and have carried a "clinched" label in every playoff projection since. Open games are exhibition-style for standings purposes: they do not count toward anyone's record.
Stage 2: The regular season
Every BBCL game on the tour between two league teams from late April through September 27 counts. Each club is scheduled for 50 regular-season games, but because the six teams split up across different cities each weekend, they reach 50 at different speeds and play uneven mixes of opponents. That is why the league ranks the table by winning percentage rather than wins or games back. The live standings show both so you can see where the difference bites.
A couple of Banana Ball quirks matter here. A win is a win however it arrives — a regulation points win, a Showdown tiebreaker, or an Equalizer finish — and there are no ties. Games are two hours, so a blowout and a nail-biter take the same time, and the league tracks "points" (innings won) rather than runs, which feeds the tiebreakers below. Games labelled Open, playoff, championship or exhibition are excluded from the table.
Stage 3: Qualifying — the top four
The October playoff field has 4 teams. One spot is already taken by the Open champion. The rest are awarded by regular-season winning percentage. When the league announced the 2026 structure in October 2025 it described the field as "the top three teams" plus the Open winner, which adds up to four when the Open champion finishes outside the top three. The league has not said publicly what happens if Texas also finishes top-three — the natural reading is that the fourth-best record takes the last spot, and that is how our playoff picture projects it (top 4 by percentage, with Texas guaranteed), but we flag it as an assumption rather than a rule we can cite.
Seeding is also unannounced. In 2025 the four teams were seeded one through four from the season's results and the first seed played the fourth in one semifinal, second against third in the other. If the league repeats that, the Open champion's seed would presumably come from its record rather than from its Open title, but again, that is not something the league has published for 2026.
Tiebreakers
Two teams level on winning percentage are separated by, in order:
- Head-to-head record. The record in regular-season games between the tied teams. The head-to-head grid on the playoff picture shows every pairing.
- Total trick plays. Successful trick plays — the behind-the-back catches, the between-the-legs throws, the tumbling grabs — are recorded in the official box score, and the team with more of them over the season wins the tiebreak. No other league seeds its playoffs on style points.
- Point differential. Innings won minus innings lost across the season, the Banana Ball equivalent of run differential.
- Head-to-head trick plays. Trick plays recorded in games between the tied teams only.
Our standings apply the first three; the fourth is listed but not computed because the feed we read does not break trick plays down per matchup. With the Firefighters and Party Animals both sitting at 23-26 in mid-August, the tiebreakers are not a hypothetical this season.
Stage 4: The October playoffs — announced vs. not
What the league has said: the 2026 schedule release in October 2025 placed the playoff tournament at Grayson Stadium in Savannah on October 1–4, and the official schedule currently lists a multi-team event at Grayson on October 1 with the start time to be announced. The championship game is fixed: the Banana Bowl on Saturday, October 10 at Nationals Park, 7 p.m. ET, on Disney+ and the Banana Ball YouTube channel.
What the league has not said, as of late August 2026: the bracket, whether semifinals are single games or short series, whether all four playoff dates in Savannah still stand, seeding rules, and the playoff broadcast schedule. Stage 5: The Banana Bowl
The two playoff winners meet once, under standard Banana Ball rules, for the first BBCL championship. It is a neutral-site game in a 41,373-seat major-league park, tied by the league to America's 250th anniversary, with all six teams and casts on hand and a closing "Final Inning Show." How the 2025 postseason worked
The 2026 format grew out of the first Banana Ball championship, which the league staged at Grayson Stadium from October 2 to 11, 2025. Four teams qualified and were seeded from the season's results: the Bananas first, the Party Animals second, the Texas Tailgaters third and the Firefighters fourth. The semifinals were short series — Bananas vs. Firefighters opening on Thursday, October 2, Party Animals vs. Tailgaters on Friday, October 3 — with a Showdown game to decide a split series, and the winners met in a single final at 7 p.m. on the closing Sunday.
The results set up a lot of the storylines for 2026. The fourth-seeded Firefighters took game one of their series against the top-seeded Bananas 1-0 and went on to eliminate them. The Party Animals swept the Tailgaters, then shut out the Firefighters 4-0 in the final behind seven innings and five strikeouts from starter Garett Delano to become the first Banana Ball champions. Compared with 2025, the 2026 system adds the Open and its automatic bid, a defined 50-game regular season with published tiebreakers, two more teams, and a neutral-site final. What it has not yet changed — or at least, not yet confirmed — is the early-October tournament in Savannah that feeds the final.
